Student's Day

What is the Student's Day for Colombians

On the 8th of June we celebrate in Colombia the Student's Day. All over the country, teachers, administratives and directives from schools universities and other educational, honor the students that, focused in their objectives, could mark an academic, cultural, artistic and sporting trace. Learners are reward with recognitions and, sometimes, presents from the educational community for their capacities that all own.

History

In the end of 1928, in the middle of an atmosphere of great national agitation, the strike of the workers of the banana enclave established by the transnational company United Fruit Company untied. In order to restrain the strike, the President of the Republic, Miguel Méndez Abbey, declared the state of siege and, appointed like Military Leader of the place, nowadays called Bananera Zone, to General Carlos Vargas, whom ordered to shoot against the working multitude causing the massive well-known human tragedy like the Massacre of the Bananeras.

The following year, the 8th June 1929, a commemorative student manifestation of the massacre and against the appointment of General Cortés Vargas like Head of the Police in Bogota, was hardly repressed when arriving at the Presidential Palace, with the unfortunate result of the death of Gonzalo Bravo Perez, a student from National University.

Since then, the 8th of June, became an in mourning commemorative date of the martyrs of the Colombian student movement.

25 years later, the context was different: industrialization was advancing towards its second phase; the early violence was detonated with the murder of Gaitán, in 1948, and General Gustavo Rojas Pinilla had assumed the power on the 13th June 1953. Internationally, the cold war climate between the two great powers, the United States and the Soviet Union, predominated.

The 8th June 1954, the students organized the annual commemoration of the death of Gonzalo Bravo, with a pacific march from the National University to the Presidential Palace. During the route some skirmishes with the police appeared but finally the march could continue up to the centre of the city. Concluded the act, when the demonstrators returned to the tranquility, suddenly appeared the public force and a gunshot killer the student of the National University, Uriel Gutiérrez.

The students, surprised of indignation and sink, went back to the university and programmed a manifestation of protest for the following day. The 9 of June, the march advanced to the Presidential Palace when appeared the verbal order to dissolve. The demonstrators sat down pacifically in the platforms and some leaders pronounced slogans and speeches. Once finished one of the interventions, the army shot against the students: "On the pavement there were eleven corpses, and near fifty wounded ones…".

The Student's Day at ENSMA

We commemorate the Student's Day at IED Escuela Normal Superior María Auxiliadora de Santa Marta with different activities. The celebration was in charge of Nucleo de Tracendencia.

We started the day with a mass where teachers sang for the students. Then we went to "The Central Yard" and did many activities to show students how much we love them.

Each nucleo performanced a show to the students.

The Communicative Nucleo sang and danced in a parody of High School Musical III. We practiced at teacher Leonor's on last Saturday. Just almost three hours practicing until we did it. We don't have enough free-time you know.

It was really difficul to act in front of all our students, we were nervous but in the end we were happy because they enjoyed our performance.
